This Is the Moment to Stand Strong.

Now is Not the Time to Back Down. This Is the Moment to Stand Strong.

We are living through an era where powerful forces are working tirelessly to dismantle diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging (DEIJB) initiatives. From executive orders gutting federal diversity programs to states like Texas shutting down DEI offices in higher education, the message is clear: They want us to retreat. To erase the progress we’ve fought for. To make us believe that striving for justice, equity, and inclusion is unnecessary or, worse, unwelcome.

But make no mistake—this work has never been just about policies or budgets. It’s about real people and real impact. It’s about creating safe and equitable spaces where every individual can thrive. It’s about transforming systems to be more just, more inclusive, and more sustainable for generations to come.

For this Forecast, we want to show you why we must continue to invest in and do this work. We will provide links, research, and resources, but BSP is not a firm that specializes in equity. If this is something you would like to work on in your life or within your organization, let us know and we will be happy to connect you to someone in our subject matter expert cohort.

Simply, we care. We’re not backing down. Not now. Not ever.

What is DEIJB

Before we talk about the why, we need to clarify the what. DEIJB stands for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging. It is more than just a set of initiatives or a line item on an organizational strategy—it is a holistic approach to creating environments where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered.

Diversity involves recognizing and celebrating the unique perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences each person brings.

Equity is about ensuring fair access to opportunities, resources, and support to eliminate systemic barriers.

Inclusion means fostering a culture where every voice is heard and valued, creating spaces where all feel welcomed and included.

Justice focuses on addressing and correcting historical and systemic inequalities, aiming for lasting change.

Belonging ensures that every individual feels an authentic connection to their organization and community, leading to enhanced engagement and well-being.

In organizations, DEIJB shows up in tangible ways:

Policies and Practices: From equitable hiring and promotion practices to inclusive benefits and support systems.

Culture and Environment: Through safe spaces for dialogue, employee resource groups, and visible leadership support for DEIJB initiatives.

Accountability and Action: By setting measurable goals, tracking progress, and being transparent about successes and areas for growth.

When DEIJB is genuinely integrated, organizations not only reflect the diversity of their communities but also drive innovation, engagement, and long-term success. It transforms workplaces into environments where everyone can thrive, contributing to a more just and equitable society.

Why DEIJB Is Non-Negotiable

The pushback against DEIJB is not just an attack on policies—it’s an attack on people. It’s an attempt to silence voices that have fought too hard and too long to be heard. They may call this work radical. We call it necessary.

Equity and inclusion are not optional. They are the backbone of thriving organizations, strong economies, and just societies. This is not a “nice-to-have”—it’s a must-have.

Diverse teams drive innovation. Companies with inclusive cultures are 35% more likely to outperform their competitors. (McKinsey & Co.)

Belonging is a public health issue. Employees who feel included are 50% less likely to experience mental health challenges like anxiety and depression. (Harvard Business Review)

Communities that prioritize equity thrive. Cities with strong DEI policies see higher graduation rates, stronger economic growth, and increased civic engagement. (Brookings Institution)

These aren’t just numbers—they are evidence. And as policies roll back, we must amplify this evidence louder than ever.

How We Keep Pushing Forward

If ever there was a time to stand firm, this is it. When they try to roll back progress, we must roll forward with even more momentum. Here’s how:

Stay Loud and Unapologetic: When organizations rebrand DEIJB under safer, softer names to avoid scrutiny, we understand the strategy—but we won’t water down our mission. Justice by any other name is still justice. We won’t hide behind palatable language when the truth demands boldness. (Learn more about the dangers of DEI rebranding)

Create Safe Spaces and Change Systems: It’s not enough to offer safety and equity within our walls—we must reshape the systems that create inequity in the first place. That means advocating for policies, demanding accountability, and showing up in the spaces where decisions are made. (Advocacy Resources from Race Forward)

Invest in Future Leaders: Policy changes can erase programs, but they can’t erase our ability to build community power. We will mentor, educate, and uplift the next wave of leaders—ensuring that even if institutions falter, the movement does not. (Supporting Future Leaders Through Mentorship)

Build Power Across Sectors: This is not just a fight for nonprofits. It’s an economic, social, and human rights struggle that requires businesses, governments, and communities to unite. We need everyone at the table to protect what we’ve built and push for what’s next. (Cross-Sector Collaboration Resources)

Use Data as a Tool to Drive Change: The evidence is on our side. We will track and report the disparities created by policy rollbacks. We will publish our findings. We will make the truth impossible to ignore. (How to Use Data to Drive Change)

This Is How We Make Lasting Change

We know that progress is rarely a straight path. For every step forward, there may be resistance. But history shows us that enduring change comes from those who remain steadfast, even when systems push back.

We are those people. This is our moment.

We will continue to create safe and equitable spaces for individuals and teams—not as an endpoint but as a foundation for broader transformation. Our work within organizations and communities is just the start. True equity requires us to confront and reshape the systems that sustain inequality, building pathways toward justice that future generations can walk upon.

We keep organizing. We keep advocating. We keep showing up. When policies roll back, we won’t just react—we will respond with clarity and purpose. We will remain on the frontlines, not merely resisting but actively constructing a world where equity is not exceptional but expected.

This isn’t about quick wins—it’s about laying the groundwork for a more just and inclusive society, where the changes we make today become the norms of tomorrow.

Finding Stability in a Time of Change

Change is nothing new for nonprofits. Community needs shift, funding priorities evolve, and policy landscapes are always in motion. But what’s happening right now is not just “the usual” level of change—it’s unpredictable, volatile, and deeply unsettling.

With a new administration, policy shifts are creating ripple effects across the sector. Nonprofits are navigating funding concerns, re-evaluating programs, and making difficult decisions—all while grappling with the emotional weight of uncertainty. Many organizations are caught between staying true to their mission and adapting to rapidly changing circumstances that feel beyond their control.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or even defeated—you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: nonprofits have always been the backbone of resilience, advocacy, and community progress. The work you’re doing matters now more than ever, and there are ways to navigate change without losing sight of your mission.

When Change Feels Out of Control, Focus on What You Can Lead

While some changes are outside our control, the way we respond, plan, and advocate is not. Here’s how to manage uncertainty in a way that strengthens your organization instead of stretching it too thin:

1. The Abundance Mindset: Start with What You Have.

When everything feels like it’s shifting, scarcity thinking can take over: We don’t have enough funding. We don’t have enough time. We don’t have enough support.

But the social sector has never been built on “enough”—it’s been built on impact, creativity, and collaboration. Approaching change with an abundance mindset means focusing on possibilities, strengths, and opportunities rather than limitations. It encourages leaders to see potential in every situation, leveraging existing resources, talents, and connections to drive meaningful growth. This mindset fosters innovation, collaboration, and resilience, empowering organizations to thrive even as circumstances evolve.

👉 Reframe the way you think:

There are people who want to help.

There is funding available—maybe from new or unexpected sources.

Volunteers do want to show up and contribute.

The key is not to chase every opportunity out of fear but to align your resources and focus on sustainable action.

2. Keep Your Mission as the Anchor

In chaotic times, it’s tempting to pivot reactively—chasing new funding streams, changing programming too quickly, or making decisions based on external pressures rather than long-term impact.

But staying grounded in your mission is the difference between short-term survival and long-term sustainability. Proactive change management ensures that every decision aligns with your core values and long-term goals, creating a sense of stability and direction. This focus keeps your team inspired, your programs impactful, and the people you serve at the heart of your work, even during times of transition. Instead of reacting, use your mission as a decision filter:

Does this change align with our values?

Are we compromising impact for short-term relief?

Will this decision help us build for the future, not just survive today?

Clarity breeds confidence. The more your team and stakeholders see a mission-driven response, the more stability they will feel—even in the face of uncertainty.

Understanding the Human Side of Change

Change becomes an opportunity for connection and growth when people feel heard, valued, and involved. By fostering open communication, inviting diverse perspectives, and creating space for meaningful participation, leaders build trust and enthusiasm. This inclusive approach transforms initial doubts into strong support, turning team members and stakeholders into passionate champions of new initiatives.

A common rule in change management:

20% will embrace change.

60% will go along with it.

20% will resist it.

How do you get more people on board? By making them part of the process. Change impacts people first. Staff, board members, and stakeholders need to feel heard and valued. Taking time to address their fears, questions, and goals builds trust—a critical foundation for any transition.

Strategies to create buy-in:

Engage early and often: Hold space for open conversations with staff, board members, and partners.

Make the “why” clear: Show how changes are tied to protecting impact, not just reacting to external pressures.

Meet resistance with empathy: Fear often masks itself as skepticism—acknowledge concerns and address them with clarity, not defensiveness.

Celebrate Progress—Not Just Results: Recognizing milestones along the way keeps your team motivated. Whether it’s completing a successful pilot program or reaching a new milestone in a multi-year plan, taking the time to reflect and celebrate helps keep momentum alive.

👉 People support what they help create. The more you include your team and community in decision-making, the stronger your collective response will be.

Advocate & Take Action

Nonprofits are more than service providers—they are critical voices for policy, funding, and systemic change. If your organization is at risk, advocacy is not optional—it’s essential.

Ways to take action:

Stay informed with policy updates from national and local advocacy groups.

Engage your board and donors in letters, petitions, and direct conversations with policymakers.

Join coalitions—strength in numbers increases the chances of meaningful impact.

Many organizations right now are feeling isolated in their fight to sustain their work. But you are not alone.

Here are organizations leading advocacy efforts that you can connect with for support, resources, and collective action:

Texas Civil Rights Project- https://www.txcivilrights.org/

ACLU of Texas- https://www.aclutx.org/

Texas Freedom Network- https://tfn.org/

Equality Texas- https://www.equalitytexas.org/

Progress Texas- https://progresstexas.org/

How Blue Sky Partners Can Help

If all of this feels overwhelming, you don’t have to figure it out on your own. For mission-driven organizations, January is the perfect moment to ask: How do we ensure the work we’re doing today builds a foundation for lasting impact?

Every social impact organization faces the challenge of balancing today’s demands with tomorrow’s vision. The world won’t slow down, and neither will your mission—but without the right systems, even the best intentions can fall short. Thoughtful consulting bridges that gap by crafting tailored strategies that unlock potential, ease the grind, and drive lasting impact.

As you plan for 2024, we’re exploring why consulting matters, how it works, and why it’s worth it. With the right partner, progress doesn’t just happen—it lasts.

Is Consulting an Investment Worth Making?

For nonprofits, this is often the first question, and it’s a fair one. Budgets are tight, and every dollar spent needs to drive real results.

Consider this: What’s the cost of not having a clear strategy? How much time, energy, and funding is lost to inefficiencies, misaligned priorities, or reinventing the wheel?

January often brings nonprofits a mix of new challenges, fresh goals, and, for many, a new fiscal year. But it can also bring the weight of unresolved decisions. Are your team’s priorities clear? Do you have the capacity to execute your vision without burning out? Is your organization ready to handle the complexities of the year ahead while staying focused on what matters most?

The right consulting partnership saves you money by eliminating inefficiencies, aligning priorities, and avoiding wasted effort. Without a clear strategy, resources are drained, and opportunities are lost. A good consultant ensures every dollar drives impact, protecting your mission and your team. At Blue Sky Partners, we meet you where you are because the cost of inaction is far greater than the investment in getting it right.

The Power of a True Consulting Partnership

Imagine this: Your team spends months on a new program, only to realize halfway through it’s draining resources without results, or a well-intentioned grant application shifts focus away from your core priorities, leaving critical areas overlooked. We’ve seen these challenges unfold, and we’ve helped organizations like yours step back, realign, and refocus on the work that drives lasting impact.

A great consultant doesn’t just outline possibilities; they help you focus on what matters most, ensuring your time, energy, and resources drive lasting results. True partnership means having a clear roadmap, defined expectations, and the right voices at the table when decisions need to be made. It’s about aligning your mission with actionable strategies that maximize impact and minimize waste.

At Blue Sky Partners, we embrace flexibility because life happens. Whether it’s time to pause, pivot, or accelerate, we meet you where you are, with shared intention and a commitment to making the work truly impactful.

Improving Efficiency Where It Counts

Social impact organizations often juggle limited resources while striving to maximize community impact. A thoughtful strategy isn’t just a visionary document—it’s a practical tool for simplifying day-to-day operations, streamlining processes, and giving your team the breathing room they need to focus on what truly matters.

A consultant’s role isn’t to slash programs, services, or impacts indiscriminately; it’s to help identify opportunities for smarter, more sustainable ways to achieve your mission.

A great consultant should focus on showing you what’s possible and providing practical solutions, not pointing out limitations. Often, this means driving leadership development and improving efficiency to help you achieve your goals.

Fostering Sustainable Growth in 2024

Growth is exciting, but it comes with challenges, like ensuring your systems and team are ready to support your expanding impact. That’s where Blue Sky Partners comes in. We help organizations create scalable strategies that align with their mission, so growth strengthens your resources, team, and long-term goals.

As you plan for 2024, it’s not just about doing more—it’s about doing it better. Transformation happens when impact and sustainability work hand in hand. Our vision is to help you achieve both, with strategies designed to last.

The Secret to Doing Good Work for a Long Time

Let’s be honest: somewhere along the way, we got it wrong. We started equating exhaustion with effort, thinking that burnout was proof we cared enough. We filled our schedules, emptied our tanks, and convinced ourselves that rest is indulgent or, worse, lazy.

But here’s a question: If burnout is the price of success, then what’s the cost of failing to rest?

What if rest isn’t the opposite of productivity but the thing that makes it possible? What if rest isn’t just about avoiding burnout but about unlocking something deeper—clarity, creativity, and the capacity to do good work for a long time?

What If Rest Were a Strategy?

Think about the best ideas you’ve ever had. Chances are, they didn’t come to you while staring at a spreadsheet. Creativity and clarity thrive in the in-between moments—the walk after lunch, the deep breath before the meeting, the quiet hours when your brain isn’t running a mile a minute.

So, what if we stopped treating rest like the thing we do after the “real work” and started seeing it as part of the process? What if rest were a strategic tool, like time management or goal setting?

Here’s the challenge: Build rest into your work, not around it. Take 10 minutes to pause before a big decision. Schedule your team’s next brainstorming session at the park instead of in a conference room. Rest isn’t the absence of work—it’s what makes the work better.

Need some inspiration? Check out this article on how strategic rest powers peak performance.

Recovery Is the Secret to Staying in the Game

I’ve run a few marathons, and here’s something they don’t tell you when you sign up: the real secret isn’t just training—it’s learning to recover. Without recovery, every step you take could lead you down the wrong path. But when you rest? That’s when your muscles repair, rebuild, and come back stronger.

The same is true for your life and work. Stress is part of growth, but without recovery, it stops being a stepping stone and starts being a wall. Recovery is different for everyone—maybe it’s reading, maybe it’s yoga, maybe it’s simply turning off your notifications for an hour. The point isn’t what you do—it’s that you let your brain and body stop doing. That’s when the reset happens.

Your Challenge for the New Year

At Blue Sky Partners, we believe that success isn’t just about productivity—rest isn’t the reward for good work. Our vision is to help individuals and organizations do good work for a long time. We want to see impact and longevity.

As 2024 winds down, take a moment to pause. Not just to plan your goals but to ask yourself: What will fuel you to actually achieve them?

Here’s to a new year that’s not just about doing more, but doing it better—with balance, rest, and recovery. Over the past seven years, we’ve facilitated retreats, engaged stakeholders, and developed comprehensive plans to help organizations navigate challenges, adapt, and thrive. But what if strategic planning wasn’t just about growth and resilience? What if it could create the permission structure for organizations to, dare we say… disappear?

Hear us out--

Imagine this: an organization so deeply aligned with its mission, vision, and values that it achieves its purpose. Not due to a lack of funding or failure but because the mission has been fulfilled. What would it take to reach that point? What kind of planning could ensure an organization succeeds in its purpose and that the legacy of that impact continues to build systemic change? This is the thinking behind what we are calling an Extinction Plan—a different kind of strategy designed to answer not just “How do we grow?” but also, “What will we leave behind?”

What Does an Extinction Plan Look Like?

Let us start by saying— we don’t have all the answers. This is a concept we’re exploring to see if we can create something truly different, something that aligns strategy, operations, and systems change in a meaningful way. So, what’s essential?

The Extinction Plan challenges organizations to think beyond the usual three-to-five-year horizon. Instead, it asks:

How will you secure your impact for the next 100 years and know when your work is truly done?

Who will carry your mission forward?

What legacy can you build not to lay a foundation for future generations?

Here’s how we imagine an Extinction Plan--

1. Real Impact Review:

To begin, take an honest look at where you are now. What strengths define your organization? By identifying core strengths, irreplaceable resources, and areas for improvement, the Real Impact Review pinpoints what must be preserved and what needs adjustment to ensure the vision is achieved and sustained. It’s about understanding what it takes to confidently say, “Mission accomplished,” and knowing how to close with intention and impact.

2. Mapping Your Network:

An organization’s impact rarely stands alone; it’s part of a broader ecosystem of partners, allies, and community members. Mapping this network ensures your mission and values can outlive your organization and be carried forward by others.

3. Community Connections:

Your legacy lives in how your organization is viewed by the people you serve. Building trust and goodwill with your community ensures your contributions are remembered with gratitude and respect.

4. Legacy & Resource Transfer:

A carefully considered legacy transfer ensures that assets, whether physical, intellectual, or relational, are passed on in ways that support future change-makers. This includes knowledge, systems, and yes, even funding, being shared in ways that redistribute power and sustain impact

Why This Matters

In a world constantly in motion, planning for closure can be one of the most forward-thinking steps we take. Of course, to do this, an organization would still need to get all the typical deliverables. You would need an Insights Report, to have a human-centered design approach, a gap analysis, and a 3, 5, or 7-year strategic plan. This is about ensuring your mission outlives you and your organization, leaving behind a legacy that serves future generations.

Let’s Co-Create the Future

This idea is still in its early days, but I’m looking for organizations brave enough to pilot this with us. If you’re intrigued—or just want to give some feedback—we’d love to hear from you. The only way we create meaningful, systemic change is by thinking beyond ourselves.

Let’s build something that outlasts us all.

Mission Clarity is Power

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reflecting on what our work would look

How would we approach facilitation, program design, or strategic planning if we had never done it before? We often think the magic lies in grand strategies or big decisions (and don’t get me wrong—they have their place), but more often, it’s the basics that make all the difference.

Want to keep your team inspired and moving in the same direction? It starts with making your mission statement crystal clear. Think of your mission as the North Star—if it’s blurry, no one knows which way to go. A clear mission keeps everyone focused and aligned, making your vision possible.

1. Start with Why
Your mission should explain why your organization exists—not just what you do. It’s about the impact you want to make. The “why” draws people in and inspires them to join your journey. Your vision is your desired end state, while your mission is what you’re doing to achieve that vision. Are they aligned? Can your team clearly express your mission and vision? If not, it might be time to revisit and refine them.

2. Be Specific and Concise
A good mission is specific, memorable, and easy to understand. Avoid jargon and keep it short enough that anyone can repeat it back after hearing it once.

3. Focus on Impact
Describe the difference you want to make, not just the activities you do. This connects your mission to a bigger story, making it more compelling. It also allows your team to easily determine if something is “on mission” or “off mission.”

4. Involve Your Team
Gather input from staff and stakeholders—they provide valuable perspectives and feel more invested in a mission they helped shape. Engaging people ensures your work happens with your community, not to your community.

5. Make It Visible
A clear mission isn’t just written; it’s lived. Share it widely—on your website, in meetings, and in all communications. Include mission and vision statements on board and staff agendas, in internal emails, and on memos as a constant reminder to the team.

A well-defined mission gives your team purpose, aligns decisions, and draws in supporters. When your mission shines brightly, so does your organization. Most of these tactics cost nothing but time, and that investment creates a flywheel effect that pays dividends over time.

If you need a partner to help refine your mission, Blue Sky Partners is always happy to offer a complimentary hour to any individual or organization focused on making an impact. Feel free to schedule a time on my calendar that works for you—we’d love to help!

AI and Social Impact—Better Together

You know how fast technology changes, right? I even picked up a few awards for social media innovation. Now? I don’t even have a Twitter or Facebook account. Wild, right? This is a reminder of how quickly things shift and how we’ve gotta keep up.

Today, we’re standing at the edge of a new frontier—Artificial Intelligence (AI). Let me pull back the curtain a bit and share this: at BSP, we’re already using tools like ChatGPT to enhance our work. Honestly, it takes me back to my early days in social media and email marketing, when I was figuring out how these platforms could amplify good causes and drive real change in my professional life. I’m feeling that same excitement now as I explore the landscape of AI, except this time, there’s even more potential to serve our clients and support the causes that matter. What began as my personal curiosity about a new technology has evolved into a deeper understanding of how we can all use AI to benefit the people and missions we care about.

To show how AI can make a difference, we’ve created a fictional nonprofit, Civic Alliance.

1. Analyzing Data:

At BSP, we handle a ton of data—articles, surveys, focus groups—you name it. AI allows us to cross-compare massive data sets, spot trends, and pull valuable insights faster than ever. Think of AI as a constantly evolving database that reveals patterns we might miss otherwise.

Civic Alliance example: Civic Alliance is leading a civic initiative to help companies create more inclusive workplaces. They’ve gathered data from employee surveys, focus groups, and leadership demographics. With AI, they can now quickly analyze this data to find key trends—like identifying which groups of employees feel the most excluded or which departments have the least diversity in leadership.

2. Impact Measurement:

Measuring impact can feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack—or, you know, proof that your cat does love you after all. (Spoiler: your cat definitely loves you.) But with AI, you can say goodbye to guesswork and hello to real-time, accurate reports that show exactly how your projects are making a difference.

Civic Alliance example: After implementing their civic program, AI can track changes in employee satisfaction and diversity in leadership. After six months, AI can analyze new survey data to show improvements in employee sentiment or increased representation of diverse groups in leadership. This data offers a clear, measurable way to demonstrate the impact of their civic efforts to stakeholders—making it easier to secure additional funding or partnerships.

3. Volunteer Matching:

Forget the Chaos—AI’s Got Your Back AI can automatically match volunteers to tasks based on their skills, preferences, and availability. Volunteers get notified about perfect-fit opportunities, and you can finally take a deep breath and relax. Build a list of skills/needs inventory, create a google form, and ask AI to do the rest.

Civic Alliance example: As their civic initiative grows, they’ll need volunteers to run workshops and offer mentorship. AI can help by matching the right volunteers to the right companies based on skills and expertise. This way, each company gets the tailored support they need, and Civic Alliance can focus on the bigger picture instead of spending hours manually pairing volunteers with opportunities.
